Penarth Pier has seen some changes over the years – here we look back at some of the more recent ones.
Penarth’s impressive pier has no doubt seen it all, opening more than 120 years ago, the pier is a welcome sight to the thousands of visitors that flock to the town.
Over the years, the popularity of the pier has seen highs and lows, although as recently as 1994 a £650,000 restoration project was initiated to repair and restore the pier to its former glory. With further repairs taking place in 1996 that cost £1.7 million.
There has also been a more recent refurbishment of the pavilion at the gateway to the pier, that has won the hearts of its many visitors.
And there is nothing like a walk along the promenade, onto what is one of only two surviving pleasure piers in South Wales, the other being Mumbles.
